Dan Walker (1922-2015)
Dan Walker is a former Illinois state governor, lawyer, and historian whose extensive interests include the military, government, law, religion, and the environment. Walker was raised in San Diego attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and served on destroyers in the Pacific in World War II and Korea. A graduate of Northwestern University School of Law, he was Editor-in-Chief of Northwestern Law Review and Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology. He went on to serve as law clerk to Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and Deputy Chief Commissioner, U.S. Court of Military Appeals. Walker was a trial lawyer with a Chicago law firm for many years, as well as President of the Chicago Crime Commission, before being elected Governor of Illinois in 1972. Since then, Walker has served in many capacities, including as Director of the Constitutional Rights Foundation, National Trustee of the American Foundation for the Blind, and Lecturer in Law at Loyola University, and has received dozens of Honorary Degrees and distinguished awards for community service. Walker’s books include Military Law (Prentice Hall, 1952) Rights in Conflict (Bantam Books, 1968), and Spotlight on Organized Crime (Chicago, 1967). Now retired, he has recently published The First Hundred Years: Successes and Failures in Christianity; Delicious Walks: Picnics and Walks in San Diego County, and San Diego: Home Base for Freedom. Walker passed away in his home at the age of 92, on April 29, 2015.
